The Rara Avis series by Stacie Birky Greene reminds us of the fraught connection between humans and the natural world. The subjects are endangered and extinct birds, all teeming with personality. In my own series Birdsong Elegies, inspired by four of Stacie's pieces, I improvised short pieces evoking my mixture of feelings about the artwork, the birds themselves, and the weight of endangerment and extinction. Each improvisation starts from a simple notated kernel, viewable on the back of each card.
